Kawana Waters State College Homework Policy
Students in Years 7-12 should engage in a regular routine
of study. This includes homework activities as set by class teachers, as
well as independent, student led study. This could include, but is not limited
to revision of class work, practising of skills learnt in class, preparation
for new learning, working on set assignment tasks, and preparation for exams
and summative assessment.
While there is some debate over the time spent on homework,
in general, the year level a child is in determines the time spent on study
each day, e.g. Year 7 = 70 minutes, five times per week; Year 12 = 120 minutes,
five times per week.
Parents and carers can support their child by:
assisting them to develop their weekly routine,
so it is structured to ensure high completion rates
ensuring their regular routine has a
well-articulated purpose. In general it should be about practice and
preparation
Overseeing that the regular routine of study
relates directly to identified learning needs, assessment and what is being done
in class time
assisting them to design their regular routine
of study so they can perform it independently.
A consistent approach to your child’s Regular Routine of
Study is only one small piece of the puzzle to building high expectations and a
commitment to excellence, but has a significant impact on student learning,
engagement and confidence.
