Q
What machine should I buy for my student?
 
A
Take a look at the minimum specifications for the College which outlines the minimum specifications for purchasing. This is a difficult question to answer as it depends on the year level and the classes that your student is doing. Please choose a machine that suits your student’s specific situation. They will need something for the remainder of their schooling, so choose something that either has warranty to last this period or expect to replace the machine if something happens.

Can students access their emails without Microsoft Outlook?

Students can access their school emails anywhere at anytime on any device that has a web browser.  Students have an office 365 account which can be found at www.owa.eq.edu.au and accessed using their school login and password.

Can students get support from school?
 
A
Students will only get support connecting to the network and the network related functions.  This is done during break times and before school in the IT Department located in the Secondary Library.  All warranty or repairs need to be handled by the vendor directly.

Can I download a free copy of Microsoft Office?

Yes, all staff and students of Education Queensland have access to downloading a copy of Office 365 2016 on a number of their devices.  All details can be found on this link: office 2016 for Windows Devices and Office 2016 for Mac
 
Who is responsible for putting the software onto the BYOD machines?

It is the responsibility of the students/ parents to have all necessary software installed to the machines before bringing them into school. Students are not to install software from school as this will affect the network for everyone.

What software will they need for school?

This depends on the classes that the student has elected to be a part of. As standard they will need MS Office (available on the BYOx page as a link) and an up-to-date Anti-Virus. If you are unsure about a class and if they need a certain software, please speak with the class teacher.

What version of Apple OSX and IOS can connect?
 
A
At this point all that are beyond 10.11 are working fine. All new OSX releases do require testing, so it is recommended that students do not update immediately. Please allow time for testing of new environments and for communication to come out in case it doesn't immediately work within the BYOD environment.

Will I need to bring the device to school everyday?
 
A
Yes.  Laptops are essential tools in each classroom.
 
Q
Will every device work inside the Education Queensland network?
 
A
No. Some devices with low specifications have been found to not connect to the EQ network.  These devices may have difficulty with the security filters used by Education Queensland.  Devices with Windows 10S build will not connect to EQ network.

Will internet be filtered from school?
 
A
An internet filter will apply when students are connected to the schools network.  As is the case currently, this will restrict access to certain sites, such as Youtube and Facebook.  At home, this filtering system will not apply to BYOD laptops.
