Welcome to Kawana Waters State College
Middle School
Middle Schooling strategies at Kawana Waters State College aim to address the special emotional, social, and intellectual needs that are specific to young teenagers.
Kawana Waters State College will provide opportunities for young adolescents to learn and grow in ways that acknowledge and respect this particular phase of their development. It is critical that during the Middle Years of Schooling that students have a schooling environment that –
  • Promotes a feeling of worth.
  • Gives them confidence in their ability to cope with the basic challenges of life and
  • Gives them quality educational experiences.
Effective curriculum design and delivery must do a number of things: build upon students' existing education base; accommodate their current stage of development; and provide the necessary tools for success in meeting the broad challenges of the future.
The Middle School curriculum at Kawana Waters State College embraces the College Values of Respect, Diversity, Excellence, Enjoyment. It also places an emphasis on meeting the needs of our students by:
  • catering for the transition from childhood to adolescence encompassing the physical, social and psychological dimensions;
  • providing a sense of stability and continuity by focusing on the links between primary and secondary education;
  • organising the timetable so that greater contact is established with a small group of teachers;
  • organising the curriculum on the basis of perceived needs of the age group and allowing for the range of intellectual abilities involved;
  • teaching strategies and classroom management based on the physical, social psychological needs of the students; and
  • acknowledging the need for parents and the wider community to be actively involved in the education of our adolescents.
The curriculum aims to enable all students to pursue individual excellence, a concept that extends beyond the classroom into all facets of College life.
Yours sincerely,
Kirsten Ferdinands
Head of College – Middle School
