Comments from past and present students, parents and home stay parents
From Marilyse & John Lebret
"My husband and I would like to thank Kawana Waters State College for the opportunity of being "Host Parents" to the students from China.
It has been both a rewarding and extremely educational experience for us and we certainly have not regretted the decision of sharing our home with the students. The problems encountered were mainly due to the language barrier, which we have a lot of fun in rectifying by using either our Mandarin phrase book, the translator, word spelling or even drawing pictures. The problems the students face at school appear to stem mainly from the pace with which the teachers speak.
Last year, we welcomed two boys into our home who have gone on to study at Melbourne University and they still keep in touch with us, their "Australian Mum & Dad". It is certainly a nice feeling to know that, in some way, we have helped them settle in a new country.
This year, we have two girls, and face the same worries that any other parents with daughters face. However, we never cease to be amazed by their politeness, their dedication to their studies and respect for other people.
Once again, thank you and I hope that you can continue this programme."
From the parents of Davide Donna, Italian student, Semester 2, 2008
Dear Vicki,
Davide told me oftem about your experience and how you are able to find solutions to any problem.
So what you say now about him is really the most important things: our sons often don't show us what really they are I'm touched.
I don't know how thank you about all!... But if you even visit Italy sometimes you'll be welcome in our home!
Sorry Davide didn't call you arriving (he will do it as soon as possible): we all were excited at his arrival and after some houres he felt sleeping.
He said that fly to Bangkok was very well: not many persons and they had place to lay and sleep. In Bangkok Davide and his frend had a quick sight seeing tour.
Fly from Bangkok to Rome was full and they arrived tired ad destination.
Anyway all very well an tomorrow back to the "real" school; Davide's theachers are all very stricts and he must work hard now: they ask he make up for lost time. They say "lost" but we say "found". Davide will remember this past experience all his life. More: for what he say now he should like come back in Australia next year and live there for ever. Time will decided!
Best things for you Vicki an many, many thanks.
Pierluigi and Licia Donna
